ALAKANUK - Body of teenager who drowned trying to save a girl is found

Searchers from the village of Alakanuk have recovered the body of a 17-year-old boy who drowned earlier this month near his village on the lower Yukon River.

Alaska State Troopers were notified Tuesday that the body of Benjamin Troy George was found several miles down river from where he was last seen the night of Aug. 7.

George and three other Alakanuk residents were crossing the Yukon in a boat when one of them, a juvenile girl, fell in. George dove in to rescue her but was never seen again. The boat's driver picked up the girl.

None of them wore life vests, troopers said.
